Gamer’s Letter

Hello world! I’ve been playing games since 2000. I was 5 years old at that time, and my frist console was Famicom... Over time, I found myself enjoying retro games from MS-DOS and NES, to PS1 and old PC titles. I love them because of their simplicity. Some of them are really hard to beat, but I only play the ones I truly enjoy. From around 2010 to 2026, I spent a lot of time playing MMORPGs. Lately, though, they no longer “click” for me the way they once did. I mostly enjoy shooter games now, especially Unreal Tournament. Every time I return to the MMOs I used to love, something feels different. It’s not because I got bored. It’s not because the games changed too much over time. It’s because I often played them during periods when I felt lost or alone, and to be honest, we all feel that way sometimes. Along the way, I joined Discord servers where I could talk with people about the games I love. Discord slowly became my safe place, a place to hang out, meet new people, make friends, and simply enjoy the moment. With this letter, I want to say something clearly: I don’t play games to escape reality. I play them to have fun, to connect with others, and to share experiences, both mine and theirs. This, to me, is what gaming truly is. After 25 years of being a gamer, I realized something important: I don’t need to play games just because they are popular. I don’t need to chase every new release. I don’t need to install every free game that appears on Epic Games. It’s okay to try new things, but once you find your place, once you feel comfortable and happy, that feeling is what truly matters. Some people don’t like gaming, and that’s perfectly fine. Don’t be harsh on them for it. Everyone spends their time differently. Don’t try to convince someone to play a game if they don’t enjoy it, just as long as you found something you love and have fun doing it. To both gamers and non-gamers: If someone you know plays games, don’t hate them for it. That might be their comfort zone, just like something else is yours. I’m not a “no-lifer.” I have hopes and dreams. I’m not running away from problems. I simply want to enjoy myself, the same way others go out to nightclubs every Saturday. Gamers don’t need to unite against anyone. They only need to speak honestly about why they love their games, and why they play them. I hope this letter helps you understand why some people play games, and what they mean to them.
